SHARON AND ARAFAT: Breaking the Impasse

The war between the Israelis and the Palestinians grows hotter and hotter. Every assault is followed by retaliation. Otherwise the victim will be perceived as too weak to respond. The hatred and suspicion are so intense that successful negotiations have become impossible. The Bush administration is ambivalent about its role. Muslim governments are reluctant to intervene, although Muslim public opinion is inflamed. Shawn and Arafat are popular symbols of failure. When do we go from here?
